I don’t quite remember how old I was when I first looked through a telescope. It was before I donned a jumper in kindergarten and before I understood how small I was compared to the grander scheme of things. I remember stepping on a stool to get me closer to the lens but couldn’t reach. My dad picked me up so that I could finally see the moon that was thousands of miles away.
I was entranced by the way the moon glowed. I was attracted to its beauty and could appreciate the deafening silence, but couldn’t quite understand the enormity. I was wanting to learn more and my father’s love of space quickly became my own. Space fascinates me. This natural attraction towards space is why I love shows like Star Trek or How the Universe Works on the Discovery Channel. I find space fascinating and different companies are actively trying to keep me engaged in this love of mine.
How does falling in love with something like that relate to how you should run your business? So glad you asked. You can’t rationally make somebody fall in love with you or your business. But you can have people become really interested. Strong emotional connections to people, places or things is a great way to increase fascination with your business. With attention spans being only a handful of seconds, we must grab people’s attention enough for them to resist being distracted with other things.
But how do you grow your business by fascinating your potential customers and keep them engaged? You have to know what fascinates them in order to create a company that is fascinating. Sounds like it can be easy? It can be if you know what you are doing.
First, you must figure out who you are as a company. What is your company’s story? What do you do well? What do you want your business to be? You and your employees have to know what you want your company to be in order to represent your company through your product or service, customer service, social media etc.
After clearly communicating the identity of your business, you must know who your audience is. This is where buyer personas come in handy. Identifying who your potential customers are and finding a way to fascinate them will become easier. You will hold their interest and engage them into your product or service. What about your product or service can somebody fall in love with? Or in other words, what would fascinate them? Or if you have a less than entertaining product or service how could you present your product in an interesting way? Then they will learn how helpful your company can be to them.
I know this may seem odd but once you start fascinating your customers you will grow your business! Do you need help with crafting, telling and living your story? We can do this together.
