Internet Marketing Tips: Don’t Fool Yourself Into Thinking Your Blog is in Shape

April 1, 2014 / by Paige Gilbert

Business heartbeatBlogging is dead. Really. You can even read the eulogy here.

Yeah, okay, I’ve never been good at April Fools. (But seriously, check out the blog eulogy – it’s brilliantly written by Copyblogger).

Blogging is in fact very much alive. So alive, that it’s the heartbeat of your internet marketing strategy. If your heart stopped beating you would die. If you stop blogging you will surely kill your opportunity of being found online.

Just like you have to take care of your heart by exercising, eating healthy food, and getting regular check-ups, you need to take care of your blog by staying active, developing healthy habits, and regularly evaluating.

It’s always easier to go to the gym and eat healthy with a trainer to help encourage you and keep you accountable. We’re that trainer. We’re going to keep you motivated and accountable by giving you blogging tips each Tuesday in April. Why you ask? Because we want to help you. It’s not enough just to blog once in awhile. It’s not enough to just write. If you’re not following best practices it’s also not worthwhile. Each component of blogging has a purpose to keep your internet marketing strategy thriving.

Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect in the series titled: Blogging: The Lifeline of Your Internet Marketing Strategy.

1.  Blog strategy: How it works

Inbound marketing is an online marketing method using internet marketing tools. Think of it as using different components in the gym – weight machines, kettle bells, bands, bars, bosu balls – to work different muscle groups. A blog is one of these components working a large muscle group. You’ll learn why Google cares so much about your blog, the importance of keywords, and why the frequency and consistency of your blog posts matter. You’ll also determine how to set goals and expectations for your small business and be able to read about the success story of one of our clients.

2.  Blog creation: Flex your writing muscles

Why are you blogging in the first place? We’ll help you answer that question.
What should you write about? We’ve got some great ideas for where you can get your ideas.
How do you get started? It’s not as hard as you think.

You’ll be able to start working your writing muscles in no time. Don’t forget to stretch.

3.  Blog checklist: Basics of a well-balanced article

If you’re taking the time to write you want to make sure it’s working for you. Well-balanced articles are your key to a healthy blog. We’ll expand on the following elements a blog post should include:

  • Keywords
  • Technical components
  • Images and media
  • Internal/external links
  • Calls-to-action
  • Readability

If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, could a blog a day keep Google at bay? Yep.

4.  Blog Results: Keeping your eye on the finish line

You won’t know if you’ve reached your internet marketing goals unless you evaluate your efforts. It’s important to keep your eye on the end goal and change course if you need to. You’ll learn the importance of evaluation, how to raise your competence level, and how to continue maintaining a healthy blog.
