5 Questions You Should Ask When Choosing an Email Marketing Consultant

January 6, 2014 / by Raquel Royers

Choosing an email marketing consultant to manage your email marketing campaign is a very smart decision as a business, but finding a good one can be tricky. This blog will go through five questions you should ask before choosing an email marketing consultant.

Email Marketing Consultant

1.  What kind of email marketing services do you want?

Before you go about hiring an email marketing consultant for your business it’s smart to have your own strategy in place so you know exactly what you want when it comes to that portion of your marketing. Be able to explain what kind of tasks you’re hoping the email marketing consultant can do for you. This way there is no confusion as to what they do and what you thought they did.

2.  Does the email marketing consultant know how to use analytics?

Ah! This is crucial! How are you going to know if those emails are even working if there is nothing tracking them. Without any analytics in place you’ll never know if 10 percent, 50 percent or maybe even 70 percent of your emails being sent out are actually getting opened. Isn’t that the whole point of your email marketing in the first place?

When choosing an email marketing consultant elaborate this point and ask what software they are familiar with and what type of analytics they can produce when it comes to your email marketing campaign.

3.  Does the email marketing consultant know how to create templates and copy for the emails?

It’s nice to know if they will be the one designing the emails when it comes to template design, visual content and the actual text. Will they be using a certain program that does this for them? Will you be providing some of it for them? All of these things need to be worked out, however it's smart to find an email marketing consultant that feels comfortable doing it all and is capable of doing it without much direction or work on your part.

4.  Is the email marketing consultant able to create lists of leads?

This is a very important part of your email marketing strategy. If you don’t keep track of who you are sending emails to, who has responded and who continues to want email by filling out forms/subscribing/etc., how are you ever going to gain customers?

5.  Are they able to nurture relationships and lead them down the sales funnel without being annoying, all at the same time?

Ok, we know that’s a mouth full and seems like a lot of work. But really, this should be a natural thing for any good email marketing consultant. If they don’t understand this question then it’s probably not a good idea to hire them to manage your email marketing.

When you send an email to someone who has filled out a form on your website or shown interest in receiving information from your business it’s a good idea to have an email flow set up for them. For example, if they downloaded an eBook you have on your website, there should be an auto email that is set up to send to them saying thank you and providing the download link again for their convenience. This is where the flow continues, a week or so later you check in again, offering another eBook they may like or something of that nature. However, there is a fine line between all of this and it can get annoying really fast! A good email marketing consultant will know how to keep that from happening.

Next time you have to hire an email marketing consultant you will know exactly what questions to ask yourself and them. We hope this was helpful for you!
