5 Surprising Things You Ought to Know About a Content Marketing Agency

May 1, 2015 / by Paige Gilbert

number_5_birthday_candleWhen I tell someone I work for a content marketing agency, they raise their eye brows, get a glassed over look in their eyes, smile and nod. If they’re brave enough to ask what I actually do, I realize that sometimes I suffer from the disease of the expert, meaning when you do something day in and day out, you forget that other people don’t really get what you do. It’s not that they’re stupid, they just need to be educated. Which is exactly what a content marketing agency aims to do in the first place using, but not limited to, the methods mentioned below.

Craft content

This may seem like a no-brainer. It’s like asking a chef what he does. Duh, cook! But cook what exactly? Is his specialty pasta? Steak? French-Italian cuisine? The same is true for a content marketer. We write content, but not just any content. I wouldn’t be very good at writing a novel, but I’m a pro at:

  • Blogs
  • eBooks
  • Website pages
  • Landing pages
  • Emails
  • Social media posts

Not only are we good at writing for the internet, but we also have our niches. Me? I’m a pro at writing about feet – yes feet (toenail fungus included), property management (free advice: be informed before moving into an HOA), and wine (cheers!).

We use all of the content we create as part of a holistic inbound marketing strategy to get you more customers.

Crunch numbers

I’m a writer, not a mathematician. But in order to see if the content marketing strategy we’ve put together is working, we have to be able to measure it. Luckily, we use HubSpot to help us fulfill all our tracking and analytics needs. It tells us how many people are visiting a website and how they’re getting there (organic search, referral, etc.), how different pages of a website are performing, number of views from blog posts, and really cool visual charts that show traffic and trends over time.

Create PSAs

A content marketing agency doesn’t just do inbound marketing. We offer traditional marketing and advertising services too, including brand messaging, TV commercials, radio spots, print ads, billboards, direct mail, and graphic design. We even do really cool PSAs. Check out this fun PSA we did to promote awareness about feral cats in our city:

Convert customers

This content creation thing we do actually converts people to customers for our clients. We don’t just write really cool stuff and hope people read it. There is a strategy behind it all – from the keyword phrases we are targeting in each blog post, to the time of day we post on social media, to the exact words and character count of headlines we create, and so much more. We know, and continue to learn, how to get a return on investment when our clients invest their hard-earned dollars into a content marketing strategy.

Client training

There are no two content marketing strategies that look the same. Clients come in all shapes and sizes. Different industries respond to different marketing tactics and each client has a different size budget. We write blogs for clients and we have some clients who write their own. We post and engage on social media for clients and we have some that do it on their own. Either way, we don’t do it blindly. We provide monthly reports on the latest marketing efforts for your business and we can also train you and your staff how to best support your own content marketing strategy.
