Increase Website Conversion With These 5 Design Tricks

Written by Raquel Royers | April 21, 2014

Are people visiting your website? If you answered yes, good! Onto the next question. Are they staying on your website and engaging with it, and becoming a lead, prospect or customer? No? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! While there is a long list of different things you could do to increase website conversion, we will focus on a few design elements that are easy fixes and just may be the trick!

Is Your Website Ugly?

OK, we know this is hard but we ask you to be completely honest with yourself right now. Type in your business's URL and take a look at your home page. What’s your initial reaction within the first couple of seconds? Blurt out your answer right now. Yes, out loud.

Did it answer any of these questions:

Is it inviting?

Are the colors complementary?

Does it look good?

Did you ‘wow’ at something on the page [in a good way]?

Did it make you smile?

Did you answer ‘no’ to all of these? Then continue on and ask yourself these next questions. If you answered ‘yes’ to three or more of these, then good job you can skip these next questions. However I would also suggest going on to read them and answer them as well since as businesses we can always improve in some way or another.

Is it ugly?

Does it make you cringe?

Is it overwhelming?

Are the colors awkward?

Is the design confusing?

Did you answer ‘yes’ to any of these? Then your website most likely needs some work and that’s one quick way to increase website conversion. Now that you’ve identified the specific point that is making it displeasing to your visitors you can fix it.

Do you have Calls-to-Action?

First off, what is a call-to-action (CTA)? A CTA is an image or line of text that prompts your visitors, leads, and customers to take action. It is, quite literally, a "call" to take an "action." (HubSpot).

Do you have these on your website? If you do, awesome, good for you! However, design definitely matters with CTA’s. Test, test and test again. If one of your CTA’s is not doing so well, change up the color, design or text. It makes a difference! People click on what is appealing to them. Here’s a great article that specifically discusses CTA design elements and the things you can tweak to see more conversion: Little Call-to-Action Tweaks That Could Give Your Conversion Rates a Big Bump.

Do you have fun visual content?

Does your website encourage visitors to stay on your page? Do you have fun, interactive content to keep them engaged and happy? One way to do this is to include infographics in your blog. Who doesn’t love an infographic?

Since we’re on the subject check out an example of a cool infographic:

Do you have videos?

Videos are a great way to engage website visitors and keep them on you website for a longer amount of time. Using YouTube videos, okay that can work. However, the jackpot is when you produce your own original videos—whether they are helpful, funny or entertaining pieces.

Have you seen this parody video someone created with Matt Cutts [Google's head webmaster] called Spam Around the World? It's interesting to say the least...

Is it easy?

Is your website designed to where it’s easy for the visitor to navigate around and can easily get to different pages/etc? This is a crucial part in your design element. It only takes a few seconds for a visitor to get frustrated and leave your website to find one that’s prettier and easier to navigate. Don’t miss out on that opportunity. It’s one you can easily fix!

Hopefully you have realized some changes you need to make to help increase website conversion. Or, if by reading this you’ve confirmed that you have a great website already, then congrats!
