The 2 Things You Need to Think About Now to Run a Successful Small Business

Written by Paige Gilbert | August 19, 2014

You’re an entrepreneur. You have to focus on what needs to be done now so that you can achieve your dreams and have a dollar sign attached to them later. In order to do this, running a successful small business includes two things: passion and provision. If you start focusing today on having both as part of your business you'll actually enjoy going to work. When you’re passionate about what you do it spills over into other areas of your company and helps fulfill the reason you started a small business in the first place: to have more freedom and opportunity.

What makes a passion and provision company?

Running a successful small business is stressful but also exciting! As a leader in our world today you are faced with a challenging economy, employees who aren’t engaged, and a small business failure rate staring you in the face. Did you know that 50% of small businesses fail within 2-3 years, and 70-90% within 10 years? Sounds depresessing, doesn't it? Nah, you see more of a challenge! You started a small business so you could become independent and in control of your own destiny. You want:

  • A business that thrives financially
  • Runs smoothly
  • Is enjoyable

You can achieve these things by making wise financial decisions, hiring the right people to work for you, and making sure your employees are engaged. YOUR passion is most important. If you aren’t passionate about what you do, how can you provide a business culture that your employees and customers can be passionate about too? You can’t just follow your passion, you have to live it.

A great example is Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs:

Being an entrepreneur is a dirty job in the beginning. A passion and provision company asks – and keeps asking – what can I do now that will continue to set myself up for success while enjoying going to work every day? A successful small business is a place where you like coming to every day, doesn’t consume your life, and provides for your needs and the needs of your employees and customers. Setting yourself up for success now means getting to do what you want later.
