GET THE LEADERSHIP GROWTH SCORECARD

It's not what you say it's what people hear.

It never fails to amaze me how powerful the words we use are and in my industry, marketing and advertising, we strive to make sure we choose those words very carefully. They have the power to communicate our thoughts, ideas and feelings. They also are subject to people understanding or misunderstanding what we said based on the grid they are interpreting the message through. Everyday I come across messages that are trying to communicate one thing and end up communicating something completely different.

This is why it is so important to remember what I call the Golden Rule of Communication, "It's not what you say, it's what people hear".

In business this is critical to understand because what people "hear" can make the difference between a little profit and a lot of profit.

Take 4:40 to watch this short film from the the Cannes Film Festival. Nothing illustrates a point like a great story and this shows how important it is to understand, "It's not what you say, it's what people hear".
